Sala Salamandra

Sala Salamandra is an 800-capacity, standing-room concert venue in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, on Barcelona’s southern edge. Its defining feature is a two-room past: the project began in 1996 at another Carrilet Avenue address, then shifted to today’s larger Sala 1 in 2007 as redevelopment reshaped the original site. The current room pairs a 50-square-metre stage with a programme that moves between live bills and late club sessions.

Built around a move

Salamandra opened on 21 June 1996, founded by David Lafuente, Lluís Correa and Francisco Tortosa, three school friends in their early twenties who set out to create L’Hospitalet’s alternative-music club. The first venue sat at Carrilet 301, among industrial estates; its name came from the kitchen salamander appliance Lafuente saw while working in a restaurant. Lafuente has led its programming since the opening. The venture also ran the Pop-Rock Ciutat de L’Hospitalet contest, whose winners included Örn in 1998, Trimelón de Naranjus in 1999 and Love of Lesbian in 2000.

Urban plans drove the key change. Salamandra opened the larger second room, today’s Sala 1, in 2007 with a Muchachito concert, then operated both spaces for a decade after the local property project stalled. In 2017, construction finally reached the original plot and Salamandra 2 closed; Sala 1 remained open. One early marker of the room’s role for rising local acts came in 2000, when Estopa played its first full-band concert in Catalonia there.

The room now

Expect a broad booking policy, with concerts across rock, indie, pop and reggaeton, plus tribute shows, DJ-led club nights and Sunday bachata-and-salsa sessions. Ticketmaster describes Salamandra 1 as hosting concerts in every style, while its club operation takes over at night. The practical setup is direct: an 800-person standing floor facing the 50-square-metre stage, with an 18-metre bar, cloakroom and artist dressing rooms upstairs. It suits audiences happy with a compact, full-floor club format instead of seated viewing.
