About Palau de la Musica Catalana

Palau de la Música Catalana is Barcelona’s 2,015-seat concert hall, built for listening as much as looking: a Catalan Art Nouveau auditorium beneath a stained-glass skylight. Its distinction is unusually literal. UNESCO placed the Palau, alongside Hospital de Sant Pau, on its World Heritage List in 1997, and the venue describes itself as the world’s only concert hall with that recognition. For a showgoer, the décor remains part of the performance’s visual field.

A choir’s home, and a charged night

The Palau began as a purpose-built home for the Orfeó Català. Choral leaders Lluís Millet and Amadeu Vives commissioned architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner; public subscriptions financed construction, which began on April 23, 1905. Barcelona society gathered for the opening on February 9, 1908. The building joined music, sculpture, mosaic, stained glass, and ironwork in one concert-hall scheme. On May 19, 1960, a Joan Maragall centenary event became the Fets del Palau: attendees sang “El cant de la Senyera” after authorities barred it from the program. Arrests followed, including that of Jordi Pujol the next day, giving this concert an enduring place in Catalan political history.

The room and its musical lane

This is a curated presenting house, with the Orfeó Català and its associated choirs at the center of its artistic plan. Choral and classical music dominate: orchestras, solo recitals, chamber music, opera, and symphonic-choral works fill the core program, while contemporary music and Catalan artists form stated priorities. The main hall is a fully seated 2,015-capacity auditorium; its stained-glass ceiling, sculptural details, and daylight-fed glass-and-iron structure make visual attention part of the experience. The richly decorated main foyer offers a striking interval setting.
