Poble Espanyol

Poble Espanyol is an open-air concert complex on Montjuïc in Barcelona, with the Plaça Major configured for up to 5,200 people at a concert. Its defining feature is the setting: a purpose-built “Spanish village” of full-scale regional architectural recreations, assembled for Barcelona’s 1929 International Exposition. For a showgoer, that means a large square concert environment framed by facades and streets instead of a conventional arena bowl.

A fairground village that became a festival site

Construction began on January 19, 1928, and Poble Espanyol opened on May 20, 1929. Miquel Utrillo, Xavier Nogués, Francesc Folguera, and Ramon Reventós shaped the project after surveying more than 1,600 Spanish towns and villages; their brief was to create an architectural survey of Spain for the Exposition. Demolition had formed part of the original plan, yet the site remained after the fair’s success.

Its hardest chapter came during the Spanish Civil War, when the complex served as a prisoner internment camp. A later revival gathered pace in 1996, when a business group took over management and expanded its cultural programming. Music entered the modern story decisively on April 28, 2001: the first Primavera Sound festival edition used Poble Espanyol, presenting four stages and 19 acts including Armand van Helden, Carl Craig, Los Planetas, UNKLE, and Yasuharu Konishi.

The room: plaza scale, village atmosphere

Poble Espanyol books public concert cycles, festivals, and private concert hires across several spaces. The present summer programme foregrounds salsa and bachata, rock, pop-diva tributes, and rumba, while the wider site also hosts underground-oriented bills through Sala Upload collaborations. The headline room is the open-air Plaça Major, a replica of Riaza’s Castilian square: 2,043.65 square metres, with a 5,200-concert capacity. Current Live Nights presentations build a Village area around the marquee and picnic zone, adding food, cocktails, and DJ sets before and after the bands.
