About Marula Cafe

Marula Cafe is a compact Barcelona music club with a 260-person capacity reported at its 2011 launch. Its defining move is the handoff: concerts and jam sessions feed directly into late DJ sets, making a show feel like the first chapter of a full night on the floor. The Gothic Quarter room centers groove in its many forms, with funk, soul, jazz, Afrobeat, hip-hop, R&B, salsa, cumbia and related sounds all in the house mix.

A Barcelona branch built for rhythm

The Barcelona Marula opened in 2011 as the second site of a concept that began in Madrid in 2002. There, founders Kwenia Carreira, Antonio Requena, Rodrigo López and Roberto Martín set out to make a home for the soul, funk and fusion records absent from much of the city’s nightlife; Requena was running the Barcelona branch when he described its early years to El País in 2012. Contemporary coverage introduced the new Barcelona club as an arrival from Madrid with an old-school, danceable R&B and funk sensibility.

Its first-year event-space profile also records a tangible design choice: architect Modesto Baquedano reused glass from Barcelona Airport’s Terminal 1 inside the club, forming a wall intended to improve sound isolation. That construction detail suits the venue’s purpose: a close room where music remains central even as the evening shifts between a band, a jam and DJs.

The room after the show

Expect a small, low-lit, standing-room club with a near-stage feel and a dance floor that matters as much as the performance space. Marula programs independent bands, concerts, DJ nights and recurring jams; its own guidance names World Groove Session on Wednesdays, Hit Me Funk on Thursdays, 101 Hip Hop on Tuesdays and Afro Latin Jam on Sundays. Concert and jam admission includes the DJ session afterward. The venue describes its access policy as inclusive and maintains a ramp plus an accessible bathroom available through staff.
