About Macarena Club
Macarena Club is Barcelona’s 80-capacity microclub, set close to La Rambla in the Gothic Quarter. Its defining feature is a DJ booth planted in the middle of the dance floor, so the crowd forms a close ring around the selector. The current room developed inside a site whose documented past reaches back to a 1920s flamenco tablao, giving a dance-floor encounter with a very specific architectural backstory.
A tablao reshaped for electronic music
Macarena’s own account places the room’s documented roots in the 1920s, when the site operated as a flamenco tablao. That history matters because the present club still occupies the same compact performance space, now aimed at DJs and a tightly packed floor.
In 2001, the premises were refurbished to host advanced electronic music, establishing the format that defines Macarena today. A 2011 Time Out review found the former flamenco stage recast as a small electronic room, booking national and international DJs behind a double-door entrance.
By 2020, Time Out described an 80-person capacity and a crowd assembled around the DJ, with an industrial interior, smoke effects, and seven mirror balls. The club’s scale is part of the proposition: artists play at eye level with dancers, inside a room built for concentration before the release of a late set.
The room today
Macarena runs a daily DJ programme that mixes local labels, international guests and emerging talent. Electronic music supplies the core, with house, techno and minimal central to its club identity. The venue has one room, an interior bar, and an upstairs area for the cloakroom and toilets. Its booth remains central on the floor, while two suspended Funktion-One Resolution 2 speakers face the dancers for a direct, close-range sound experience.
