Heliogabal

Heliogàbal is a 120-capacity concert room in Barcelona’s Gràcia district, built around the scale of a bar and the concentration of a listening room. Its distinguishing feature is that compressed, near-stage encounter: a venue whose cultural association has presented close to 4,000 concerts and recitals since 1995, while also making space for poetry and exhibitions. A 2023 rebuild added a proper stage, improved sound and gave audiences clearer views of the performers.

A bar caught in Barcelona’s live-music rules

Paolo d’Antonio and cultural activist Mercè “Memi” March founded the Associació Cultural Heliogàbal at 80 Carrer de Ramón y Cajal in 1995. It began as a meeting point for Barcelona’s alternative artists, musicians and poets, and its small-format programme later earned the 2012 Ciutat de Barcelona music prize. The room’s defining crisis arrived in 2016: after fines and a regulatory dispute around amplified live music, Heliogàbal suspended concerts in January and temporarily closed in May while the city’s rules and Gràcia use plan were being settled. It returned that October with poetry recitals and acoustic music as permits were finalized. The room today

Expect a deliberately broad independent bill: indie and folk songwriters, rock and pop bands, electronic projects, Latin-rooted sets, experimental work and occasional jazz. The venue’s own programming statement puts small-format concerts, poetry recitals and exhibitions at its core, so bills often favor discovery and artist-led presentations over large-scale production. The renovated stage creates extra performer space, better sound and improved sightlines; capacity reaches 120 during concerts, while the bar itself measures 33 square metres.
