Casino L'Aliança del Poblenou

Casino L’Aliança del Poblenou is an 802-seat theatre on Barcelona’s Rambla del Poblenou, run within a cultural, recreational and mutual-aid institution founded in 1869. Its defining feature is the Sala Gran’s tilting platea: raked seating creates a conventional theatre configuration, then the floor can be levelled and seats removed for dances and large-format events. A cork ceiling, retained in the main hall, gives the room its particular acoustic character.

A society remade in concrete

L’Aliança began on September 19, 1869, as Societat l’Aliança, formed for cultural, recreational and mutual-aid purposes in industrial Poblenou. Its early mission included a members’ mutual-support society alongside cultural life, placing the hall’s present concert role inside a much broader civic tradition.

Political pressure reshaped the institution. During Miguel Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship, the society closed for several months; a 1928 split among members, linked by Barcelona’s Municipal Archive to support for the dictator, led to the creation of the new Casino L’Aliança. The group built its current Rambla home in 1929. Architect Amadeu Llopart designed the theatre and noble hall, though the theatre reached completion in 1944.

The building then endured the Civil War as an occupied site: the Committee for the Defence of the Republic seized it after an attempted arson attack. That survival gives a show here an unusual backdrop: a working neighbourhood association’s hall, built through a break with its own past and still used for public culture.

The room on show night

Expect a programmed civic arts venue, alongside room hire and in-house activity including theatre, choirs, gospel, dance and music groups. The concert mix reaches across classical, folk, Latin, pop, rock, jazz, indie and R&B, with theatre and dance sharing the calendar. For seated shows, the raked platea offers a clear audience-facing layout; for dance-led sets, the flattened floor changes the feel entirely. The venue also presents a 100-seat Petit Club for smaller café-concert-scale uses.
