About Valley Bar

Valley Bar in Phoenix places its 250-person Music Hall below street level, reached through an alley entrance before a staircase drops into the venue. The small concert room anchors a 480-person venue complex that also includes the Rose Room, Game Room and Reading Room. That below-ground split—cocktail lounge and performance space under a 1949 Central Avenue building—gives a show here the feel of a contained downtown night, with the stage kept separate from the social rooms.

The basement’s second act

The building went up in 1949 and later held The Hub art galleries, Bickoff’s Deli, Theater Triad and the Sub Cultural Arts Center; Valley Bar’s own history records Soundgarden, Green Day and Bad Brains among the artists who played that earlier stage. Concert promoter Charlie Levy, also behind Crescent Ballroom and Stateside Presents, discovered the locked basement while Stateside’s offices occupied the building. He leased a space filled with stored material, shaped it into an 8,000-square-foot hall-and-lounge operation, and opened Valley Bar in May 2015. The launch built a room around an unusual Phoenix asset: a true basement, with the Rose Room named for former Governor Rose Mofford and a Music Hall beside it. On August 22, 2017, the venue closed for a single day as Donald Trump held a rally at the Phoenix Convention Center. The episode captures how closely the room sits within downtown’s daily current.

A night inside

Valley Bar says its primary booking focus is local and national artists, and its calendar pairs ticketed touring bills with free DJ, club, karaoke and community events. That programming makes the listed indie, folk, alternative, country, electronic and pop lanes part of a broader mix that also reaches hip-hop, R&B and Latin nights. For concertgoers, the key practical fact is scale: roughly 250 in the Music Hall, with a Rose Room for drinks and a Game Room with billiards and games nearby. The entry route runs down an alley and stairs, so arrival begins before the first chord.
