About Marquee Theatre
Marquee Theatre is a 1,500-capacity concert room in Tempe, within metro Phoenix, whose scale keeps the stage close: the rear of the festival-seating house sits roughly 80 feet away. That compact depth is the practical draw for a touring-show venue of this size, pairing a large stage with a crowd that remains connected to the performance. The room welcomes all ages, with alcohol service for guests carrying valid ID.
Country revue to concert hall
The building opened in January 1993 as the Red River Opry, a freshly built, pink-domed, 1,000-seat country theater at Mill and Washington. Its first production, the Red River Revue, mixed crossover country, pop and comedy; J. David Sloan served as emcee on opening weekend. Every seat then fell within 80 feet of the stage, a design choice that still defines the room’s concert-going proportions.
The Opry filed for bankruptcy and closed in 2001. Denver promoter Nobody In Particular Presents bought the property in 2002, renovated it for a year, and reopened it as Marquee Theatre in March 2003. Phoenix New Times described the conversion as a shift away from auditorium seating and country revue programming; by 2026, the venue had presented over 2,000 concerts under the Marquee name.
The room today
Marquee functions as an all-ages, national-touring stop, with rock and alternative at its core and bills that also reach punk, metal, reggae, hip-hop, indie and EDM. Expect a standing, festival-seating floor beneath a balcony, plus a large outdoor patio; alcohol service is separated by ID rules. The 1,500-person layout favors direct sightlines and a full-room response over arena distance, especially for loud guitar bands and rhythm-led shows.
