About The Rebel Lounge
The Rebel Lounge is a 325-capacity live-music club in Phoenix, housed in the former Mason Jar, the Central Phoenix room that began booking rock, punk and metal in 1979. Stephen Chilton of Psyko Steve Presents remade the address as The Rebel Lounge in 2015, keeping its small-scale club format while opening its calendar to emerging touring acts and Arizona bills. The draw is palpable: a current venue with a long-running local-music address beneath it.
A room remade
The building’s first concert identity was The Mason Jar, founded in 1979. Its early bookings included artists such as Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Jane’s Addiction, Green Day, Guns N’ Roses and Nirvana before wider success; during the early 2000s, the club widened its focus across modern rock, indie and metal. The Mason Jar era ended in 2005, and the property returned to the market in 2014. Chilton and local developer Chuckie Duff bought the building, renovated it and opened The Rebel Lounge on May 20, 2015. That conversion gave Phoenix a working club again instead of a museum piece. During the pandemic closure in 2020, the team shifted into daytime coffee service and livestream shows, including performances with Jimmy Eat World, then resumed the concert-room role that remains central to the space.
The room now
Expect a low-slung, 3,000-square-foot room built for proximity, with a 325-person limit and a packed-floor club feel when a bill draws. Psyko Steve’s programming pairs local openers with touring artists and runs across punk, hard rock, metal, indie, folk, electronic, R&B and hip-hop; genre shifts can be sharp from night to night. For concertgoers, the payoff is scale: shows land in a compact room before an artist’s Phoenix dates move into larger halls. Phoenix New Times has described the venue as a regular platform for both local and national acts.
