About Ak-Chin Pavilion
Ak-Chin Pavilion is the former name for Phoenix’s Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre, a 20,000-capacity open-air concert ground on the city’s west side. Its defining split is simple: 8,106 reserved seats sit beneath the pavilion roof, while a 12,000-person hillside lawn rises behind them. A ticket choice therefore shapes the night: covered, fixed seating closer to the stage or broad lawn viewing with video screens, all on a scale built for major touring productions.
A changing marquee, a first Ozzfest, and a Green Day document
Opened in 1990 as Desert Sky Pavilion, the site began with Billy Joel, according to Live Nation’s venue history. Six years later, it hosted the first Ozzfest, giving the amphitheatre a place in the origin story of a heavy-music festival whose touring editions became a summer institution. The building’s name then became its own timeline: Desert Sky, Blockbuster Desert Sky, Cricket, Cricket Wireless, Ashley Furniture HomeStore, a return to Desert Sky, and Ak-Chin Pavilion all came before the January 11, 2023 change to Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre. One recorded night gives the Cricket period a particularly clear artifact: Green Day taped “Cigarettes and Valentines” at Cricket Wireless Pavilion on August 30, 2010, and the performance appeared on the live release Awesome as Fuck.
Pick your distance from the stage
Live Nation programs the room as a large national-tour stop. Its current calendar spans pop and R&B with Kali Uchis, rock with John Mellencamp and Train, and metal with Motionless in White, matching the broad genre mix suited to a 20,000-person shed. Reserved seats bring the roof’s shade, overhead fans, and misting systems; the sloped lawn offers room to spread out, with twin high-definition screens carrying the stage image. Lawn-chair rentals and upgraded lawn spaces add further options for the back half of the venue.
