About The Exchange Twickenham

The Exchange Twickenham is a purpose-built theatre and community venue in London, with 285 tiered seats and room for 300 when an additional stage row is used. Its defining feature is flexibility: the centre block of stalls retracts, opening a large floor area for rehearsals, productions and alternative event layouts. The building sits within Brewery Wharf, directly opposite Twickenham station, and pairs the auditorium with studios, a conservatory and bar.

A sorting-office site becomes a stage

The story starts with redevelopment. Richmond Council approved the former Royal Mail site for redevelopment in 2014; as part of the Brewery Wharf scheme, developer St James agreed to build a community facility. On 18 July 2017, St Mary’s University received the keys and took on management under a Council lease. The venue opened that October as The Exchange, owned by Richmond Council and set aside for university activity, community groups and public events.

Its first autumn placed music within a deliberately broad programme. The opening-season schedule paired folk singer Chris Wood’s 7 December 2017 show, presented with TwickFolk, with Nancy Kerr and the Sweet Visitor Band, comedy, talks and theatre. That early collaboration gives the room a concrete folk connection, rooted in a long-running local promoter whose archive records both shows.

The room today

Expect a seated, close-focus concert experience with tiered sightlines, professional staging and a staffed bar available for events. The Exchange books music alongside theatre, comedy, film, talks and community activity; artistic-programming proposals go through a review process, while its hire offer also welcomes rehearsals, screenings and workshops. Folk remains an identifiable strand through TwickFolk links, while current music programming also reaches rock-pop tribute shows and local showcases. For a gig, the appeal is a compact auditorium built for listening, with adaptable seating behind the scenes.
