About Zédel (Crazy Coqs)

Crazy Coqs is an 80-capacity cabaret and live-music room within Brasserie Zédel in London’s Piccadilly, reached downstairs through the street-level café. Its particular draw comes from the address itself: the stage and tables occupy the former Chez Cup Bar, a 1934 cocktail bar created beneath the Regent Palace Hotel’s entrance rotunda. That gives a short show an unusual setting: a surviving Art Deco room with a working grand piano, drinks at the table and the scale of a small listening room.

A cocktail bar becomes a cabaret

The building began as part of J. Lyons & Co.’s Regent Palace Hotel, which opened in 1915 with 1,028 bedrooms and ranked as Europe’s largest hotel at the time. In 1934, designer Oliver Percy Bernard transformed the basement billiard room into the Chez Cup Bar; Historic England records the room beneath the entrance as a private dining bar within his wider 1930s refurbishment. That sequence remains legible around a performance: Bernard’s original scheme was recreated from architectural drawings, while the foyer retains tobacco-coloured travertine.

The hotel slid into decline after the Second World War, and redevelopment plans in 2004 raised concern among conservation groups about the interiors. The Crown Estate selected Dixon Jones and Donald Insall Associates for adaptation and restoration work. Brasserie Zédel reopened in 2012; Chris Corbin and Jeremy King opened its brasserie, American bar and Crazy Coqs performance room together.

What the room offers now

Programming centres on cabaret, live music, theatre, comedy, magic and literary events. Its monthly Début night gives emerging musicians a platform across jazz, funk, soul, folk and pop. Daytime private hires suit presentations, literary or fashion events; evening hires are arranged with the events team. Inside, a small stage and flexible layout support tables, with seating allocated by the maître d’. Table service delivers cocktails, wine, champagne and bar snacks during shows.
