Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London

About Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club

Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London is listed at 300 capacity; a rebuilt 140-capacity Upstairs room sits above the main club. Its sharpest distinction is historical: on 16 September 1970, Jimi Hendrix made his final public appearance here, joining Eric Burdon and War. The Frith Street address occupies part of a Grade II-listed terrace of former houses built in 1804–07, giving this late-night club an early-Georgian shell.

A basement, an exchange deal, and one last jam

Tenor saxophonists Ronnie Scott and Pete King opened the club in a Gerrard Street basement in 1959. American musicians faced a British performance ban amid union disputes; in 1961 King negotiated an exchange arrangement that brought American artists into British clubs, with Zoot Sims arriving for a month-long residency. The original room closed on 27 November 1965 as the club moved to 47 Frith Street; Scott and King revived Gerrard Street as the Old Place in September 1966 until its lease expired in 1967. Five years later, Hendrix joined Burdon and War for two songs at Ronnie’s. He died two days afterward, making the appearance his final public one.

Tables, late sets, and an upstairs rebuild

Jazz anchors the booking, with established players and newer voices sharing a programme that also reaches soul, R&B, gospel, hip-hop and classical music upstairs. The club presents live music seven nights a week, including two main shows each evening, Monday Jazz Jam sessions, late sets, and weekend afternoon performances. Downstairs, guests sit at tables with food and drinks served through the show; low lighting and close-up sightlines shape the main-room experience. Upstairs adds purpose-built acoustics, Yamaha and D&B Audio systems, plus a Yamaha S3X grand piano.
