About MOTH Club
MOTH Club is a 300-capacity room in Hackney, London, operating inside the Old Trades Hall. Its calling card is a main hall whose gold-glitter ceiling and foil stage curtain frame shows with the scale of a club night and the closeness of a bar-room set. The venue still shares space and history with the Memorable Order of Tin Hats veterans’ organisation, so a gig here takes place inside a working social club with a distinct past.
A veterans’ hall remade
The red-brick Old Trades Hall was built in 1912 as a venue for trade unions and the Hackney Trades Council. In 1972, it became the General Browning MOTH Club, a “shell hole” for ex-service people affiliated with the Memorable Order of Tin Hats. Financial strain during 2012–15 led the club to partner with events agency LNZRT, which refurbished the building and opened its stage to gigs, comedy and club programming while the veterans’ branch continued to meet there.
A defining recent chapter came with two neighbouring residential proposals. On March 25, 2026, Hackney Council rejected one scheme after planning officers found the developer had failed to demonstrate that it would avoid unreasonable restrictions on the venue. A second adjoining proposal remained in play, keeping the building’s long-running tension between late-night culture and new housing firmly in view.
The room today
MOTH’s booking approach is intentionally broad: live music and promoter-led club nights sit alongside comedy, film screenings and members’ gatherings. Indie is a central thread, while the calendar also reaches toward country, folk, pop, alternative, electronic and R&B bills. Expect a compact main hall, an old dancefloor, a small gold-curtained stage and an upstairs room used for events and artist green-room space. Booths near the stage can be reserved for guests who need seating.
