About Royal Vauxhall Tavern

The Royal Vauxhall Tavern in London is a flexible room for up to 380 people standing, with a centre stage at the heart of an intimate theatre-style floor. Built on the former Vauxhall Gardens site, the Grade II-listed building brings Victorian architecture into close contact with drag, cabaret, club nights and live music. Expect a compact, audience-facing experience: performers play close, and the room’s identity comes from performance culture as much as any single genre.

A building saved for performance

The tavern was built in 1860–62, probably by architect James Edmeston the elder, during redevelopment of Vauxhall Gardens after the pleasure gardens closed in 1859. Publicans Poole and Venner bought it in 1889; their 1896 refurbishment added a long curved bar following the line of the structural columns, alongside a stage used by drag artists. Those surviving cast-iron columns remain part of the interior today.

A property-developer purchase in 2014 triggered a campaign focused on retaining the building’s LGBTQ+ performance use. In September 2015, following the RVT Future application, Historic England secured Grade II status for the tavern; government material described it as the first UK listing for an LGBT venue. The designation preserved a building whose cultural history carries equal weight with its curved mid-Victorian façade.

The room today

The RVT books cabaret, performance and club nights as residencies, regular fixtures or one-off events. Alternative, rock and indie sit within its music profile, while the broader programme centres queer nightlife, drag and theatrical presentation. Promoters can configure tables and chairs for 120 seated, aim for around 200 with mixed seating and standing, or clear the furniture for the 380-capacity standing layout. A dressing room, theatre lighting, air conditioning and a fully stocked bar support the close-range, centre-stage format.
