The Opera Hall

The Opera House is a 950-capacity concert room in Toronto’s Riverside district, inside a former vaudeville theatre. Its live stage still sits within the original 35-foot proscenium arch, a theatrical frame that gives standing-room shows an old-house silhouette. Expect a mid-sized crowd, a deep floor and viewing levels built into the building that opened as La Plaza Theatre in 1909. The room’s scale lands between club and theatre, while the surviving architecture keeps the visual focus squarely on the stage.

A theatre remade for amplified music

La Plaza began in 1909 as a 900-person Edwardian vaudeville hall, then shifted into cinema as film displaced vaudeville. The venue closed in the late 1930s for a second-storey balcony; multiplex competition later sent the single-screen house back toward live performance. A 1989 sale rechristened the building The Opera House and began its concert-hall era.

That rebirth almost arrived under a cloud of smoke. CityNews reports roughly $1 million in renovations, two unsuccessful opening attempts, then a blown fire panel during the final inspection; owner Athena Towers recalled receiving approval after its repair. The early booking history supplied a payoff: Nirvana played September 20, 1991, with Melvins on the bill. Archive records show Dave Grohl’s kick drum failed at the start of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” prompting an improvised jam while it was fixed.

How the room plays

Concerts generally use standing-room general admission, with alternate configurations available for particular events. The schedule covers indie, pop, electronic, country, R&B, rock, alternative and jazz, alongside occasional comedy and nonmusic productions. Tiered main-floor, mezzanine and balcony levels improve sightlines; the balcony has its own bar and looks onto the 900-square-foot stage.
