About Lee's Palace
Lee’s Palace is a 550-capacity rock hall in Toronto’s Annex, with its main room directly beneath the Dance Cave. A mural-coated Bloor Street facade marks a building that began as a silent-film theatre, while the present room keeps the scale close for emerging touring acts and local bills. Its paired floors give concert nights a built-in second act: live music below, dancing above.
A cinema, a cabaret, then a rock room
Lee’s story begins in 1919, when the address opened as Allen’s Bloor Theatre, a silent-film house built during the Allen chain’s Toronto expansion. Film screenings continued into the 1950s; later uses included the Blue Orchid, a burlesque dinner theatre with an upstairs bar and dance floor. Chong Su Lee converted the site into Lee’s Palace in 1985, opening the live room with Handsome Ned and following with Blue Rodeo. After Lee’s death in 2001, Collective Concerts owner Jeff Cohen bought the venue and later the building. One sharply documented night came on April 16, 1990: Nirvana’s Toronto debut arrived five months before Nevermind, drew roughly 100 people, and ended amid bottles and shattered glass after Kurt Cobain began throwing them. That unruly set remains a vivid record of the room’s early-breakthrough era.
The room today
Rock and alternative anchor the programming, with indie, electronic, metal, R&B, pop and hip-hop also appearing on the calendar. Lee’s mixes veteran acts, emerging artists, and local Canadian bills; promoters can reach the venue through its dedicated bookings contact. Expect a 550-person main room below the Dance Cave, plus the mural-fronted exterior that makes the entrance easy to spot. The venue opens around scheduled shows, keeping its focus squarely on the night’s bill.
