The Garrison

The Garrison is a 270-capacity Toronto venue on Dundas West, built for close-range club shows across indie rock, hip-hop, electronic music, pop and heavier bills. Its defining feature is an unusually clear split for a room this size: a sizeable front bar gives way to a larger rear performance space with an elevated stage. That arrangement makes the room feel like a social bar at arrival and a focused standing concert room once the set begins.

A sports bar became Wavelength’s new home

The Garrison opened in October 2009, when owners Lee Van Veghel and Shaun Bowring took over a one-level Dundas West building whose previous sports-bar tenants had been pushed out. Bowring arrived with deep local-booking connections: he had booked Sneaky Dee’s, and its long-running Sunday-night Wavelength series followed him to the new room after seven years at its former home. CityNews described the launch layout as a front bar, rear music room and elevated stage—an intentional scale between Sneaky Dee’s and the Horseshoe Tavern.

Its early Wavelength chapter supplies the sharpest dated marker. In February 2010, the five-night Wavelength 500 celebration closed at The Garrison with Kids on TV, the Barcelona Pavilion, Mean Red Spiders, Neck and Boars. The weekly series then shifted into a monthly format, while Wavelength’s timeline records later Garrison appearances by Japandroids, METZ, Joe Lally, Sook-Yin Lee and the Strumbellas. The room also hosted No Fest’s first edition in 2016, a Buzz Records gathering for Toronto indie music.

The room now

Expect a standing, bar-led club format with the stage at the back and the crowd gathered tightly in front of it. The booking approach remains wide-ranging: Exclaim documents electronic, hip-hop and garage-rock performers alongside festival presentations, while the current calendar’s mix extends through rock, pop, country, metal and alternative shows. Shaun Bowring has also been identified as the venue’s owner and booker, a useful clue to its long-running connection with local promoters and emerging acts.
