About The Concert Hall

The Concert Hall is Toronto’s roughly 1,200-capacity room inside the 1918 Masonic Temple at Yonge and Davenport. Its distinguishing feature is a public auditorium conceived within a Masonic complex: the room carries a raised stage, ornate proscenium arch, hardwood dance floor and active theatre-lighting rig. The result is a large standing-room concert space with architectural framing already built into the sightline, instead of a converted warehouse shell.

A public hall with rock-era chapters

Opened with ceremony on January 1, 1918, the Temple belonged to an independent corporation of Masons and at one point accommodated 38 lodges and chapters. The ground-floor hall had a practical second role from the outset: rental income, with dressing rooms, stage facilities and food-preparation space. Big bands filled it in the 1930s and 1940s; after later identities including Club 888 and the Rock Pile, Led Zeppelin played its first Toronto date there on February 2, 1969. That shifting music life came close to an abrupt end when the building’s condition and a prospective sale put pressure on its future in the 1990s. Heritage designation arrived in 1997, protecting the 1918 William F. Sparling building. The current Concert Hall identity returned publicly in June 2017 through the Toronto Jazz Festival, opening with Randy Bachman and Walter Trout.

What the room offers now

Today, 888 Yonge presents concerts while marketing the hall for meetups, corporate gatherings and parties, a mixed-use approach that keeps the building active beyond touring nights. Collective Concerts joined 888 Yonge to book shows in 2023, and the current schedule reaches across alternative and indie, jazz, rock, electronic, pop, metal and folk. Expect a broad hardwood floor facing the raised stage, with the proscenium supplying a theatre-like focal point; that combination suits full-band bills, dance-oriented sets and seated-format events alike.
