About The Baby G

The Baby G is a 175-capacity Toronto music venue whose scale keeps performers and crowd in the same immediate frame. Its defining feature is a two-part layout: a front bar and a separate back stage room, connected by a mostly standing-room setup. The back room’s broad floor and 15-by-15-foot stage give the venue clear sightlines, while blue-and-white tiles left from the building’s butcher-shop era add a strange visual signature. A Smaller Room With a Clear Brief

Shaun Bowring opened The Baby G in September 2016 as a satellite to his larger Dundas West venue, the Garrison. The building had most recently housed the Bola Bar sports bar; before that, the tiles retained in the front room dated to its time as a butcher shop in the 1980s. Bowring’s brief was specific: give local indie bands and smaller touring acts a room where a crowd of around 100 could feel full, with adequate stage space and sound. He moved the Garrison’s analog sound system into the new club and formed Transmit Presents with Denholm Whale and Chris Slorach to handle bookings. The opening-night bill, Buzz Records act Twist’s September 16, 2016 record release, set that early emphasis on local artists with a reason to make an occasion of a small room.

The Room Today

Expect a close, standing-heavy concert experience with two bars: one in the front space and one by the stage room. The Baby G’s booking identity still favors emerging local artists and first-stop touring acts, with indie, alternative, post-punk and neo-psych central to its documented profile; the current calendar also reaches into metal, rock, pop, electronic, folk and Latin nights. Arrive ready to stand, settle near the stage for the strongest line of sight, or use the few front-window tables for a bar-side view of the room’s pace.
