About Rivoli

Rivoli is a 240-capacity concert venue on Toronto’s Queen Street West. Its show space is a back room behind the main-floor restaurant, while the floor above holds a pool hall with a large bar, about a dozen tables and arcade games. That three-part layout gives a gig night its particular character: dinner, a close-range performance, and billiards all occupy the same building.

A performance address since the 1920s

Rivoli opened in 1982 in a building that had housed the Rivoli Theatre, a small hall used for vaudeville and burlesque during the 1920s. The newer operation turned the address into a bar, restaurant and performance space, placing amplified music and comedy in the back room. Soon after the opening, an early version of The Kids in the Hall used the Rivoli for short sketch sets; the venue became a working stage where the troupe developed material before its television years.

The pandemic created a sharp ownership chapter. The previous owners put Rivoli up for sale in 2020, and John Christensen took the reins in 2021. His arrival kept the room operating through a period when Toronto venues faced acute pressure, while the current program continues to combine concerts with comedy and dance events.

How the room works now

The Back Room books shows roughly six months ahead and regularly hosts concerts, dance parties and comedy, with folk, rock and alternative fitting comfortably into that mix. For a packed gig, expect a cleared standing room for 240; tables and chairs enter the plan for groups below 200, with seated capacity reaching 90 and theatre-style seating 100. A dedicated back-room bar serves the audience, and the adjoining restaurant can expand flow-through capacity to 300 for larger events.
