About Jazz Bistro
Jazz Bistro is a 203-capacity Toronto supper club whose central draw is live music paired with dinner service. Its main-stage calling card is “Red Pops,” a red Steinway baby grand piano, set inside a three-floor room that was redesigned with sightlines in mind. The address carries an unusually direct link to the city’s jazz-club past: this is the former home of Top O’ The Senator.
A Victoria Street second act
The story begins with the previous club. In June 1990, Bob Sniderman opened Top O’ The Senator above the Senator Steakhouse at 251 Victoria Street; Sybil Walker managed the room. Its programme included Canadian players such as Diana Krall and René Rosnes alongside visiting artists including Shirley Horn, Joe Pass, Terence Blanchard and Ray Brown. Several live records also came from the Senator stage, including Brian Dickinson’s 1994 Live at the Senator and David Braid’s 2003 Vivid.
Top O’ The Senator and the Steakhouse closed in March 2005. The space then sat shuttered for eight years before Colin and Joan Hunter converted it into Jazz Bistro, which opened in April 2013. The rebuild retained the live-room purpose while adding a bar, a stage and a red-lidded Steinway; the redesign specifically addressed performer sightlines.
The show-night setup
Jazz Bistro programs live music Tuesday through Saturday, with walk-ins welcome, and its current listings place jazz at the centre: piano trios, quartets, standards, fusion and late-night jam sessions all fit the bill. Expect a supper-club format, with food and cocktails part of the evening, plus a main stage led by Red Pops. The building also has several event spaces, giving the venue a more segmented feel than a single-room club.
