Horseshoe Tavern

Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern is a 400-capacity concert venue whose defining feature is its split personality: a front bar open daily and a live-music room at the back. That arrangement grew from a 1980s redesign that shifted the stage to the rear, creating a neighbourhood drinking space up front and a focused show room behind it. For concertgoers, the result is a close-range, standing-room club experience with the bar culture built into the visit.

Country roots, a punk rupture

Jack Starr bought 368–370 Queen Street West in 1947 and opened the Horseshoe as a local bar and restaurant. In the mid-1950s, he converted much of it into a full-time music venue, first booking country and rockabilly performers; Marvin Rainwater was his first booking. That country foundation later met a very different programming experiment when promoters Gary Cormier and Gary Topp took charge of bookings in 1978, bringing punk, new wave, jazz, reggae, and singer-songwriters through the room.

Their final Horseshoe night, December 1, 1978’s Last Pogo, featured the Mods, Viletones, Scenics, Cardboard Brains, and Teenage Head. Police stopped the concert and a riot followed on Queen Street; filmmaker Colin Brunton captured the evening for The Last Pogo. After a period of failed operators and a short Stagger Lee’s strip-club-and-cover-band phase, Starr returned in 1982. Kenny Sprackman and Michael “X-Ray” Macrae then helped revive the business, with Dan Aykroyd and Richard Crook participating in its financing.

The room now

The calendar’s mix of indie, rock, alternative, country, folk, pop, R&B, and occasional jazz reflects a broad club-booking approach, with local bills, touring acts, tribute nights, and free shows sharing the schedule. Artists submit music links, genre and audience information, Toronto gig history, and existing local dates; every band member must be 19 or older. The main room is wheelchair accessible via a ramp request at security, while a few small steps lead toward the washrooms. Expect the front bar first, then the rear live room once doors open.
