About Gothic Theatre
Gothic Theatre puts a 1,100-person concert room inside a 1929 Englewood movie house, a few miles south of Denver. Its calling card is cinematic: the building introduced the Denver area to talking pictures, while its preserved Art Deco interior now frames loud, close-range club shows. That scale places national tours and hometown bills in the same tall, theatre-shaped room.
A movie house, a near miss, and a 1991 set
Built at 3263 South Broadway in 1929, the Gothic became one of Englewood’s central attractions as films brought dramas, musicals, westerns and comedies to the neighborhood. A 1940s façade redesign changed its street face, while much of the interior survived. Film exhibition later gave way to adult-film programming and an early-1980s closure, leaving the building largely empty apart from occasional rock bills.
One of those bills landed on June 10, 1991: Nirvana opened for Dinosaur Jr., alongside the Jesus Lizard, and played one of the earliest live versions of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Rescue followed in 1998, when former movie prop master Steve Schalk and Todd Kinion bought the threatened building for $175,000, rebuilt it as a music venue and retained its Art Deco character. The Rebirth Brass Band reopened the room on June 23, 1999.
The room today
AEG Presents operates the Gothic, whose concert policy pairs local musicians with nationally touring acts. Programming crosses rock and alternative, with country, folk, electronic, pop, metal and indie also in rotation. Expect a tall former theatre with a balcony and preserved Art Deco details; the balcony supplies strong sightlines, and AEG upgraded the PA in 2018. The room also accommodates private functions and special events.
