About Ogden Theatre
Denver’s Ogden Theatre is a 1,600-capacity concert room on East Colfax, housed in a 1917 neighborhood movie theatre designed by Harry W. J. Edbrooke. Its distinguishing feature is the conversion of that old auditorium into a flexible, multi-level show space: a 2006 renovation added a wraparound balcony while carrying historic architectural details into the new work. The result pairs full touring-room scale with a theatre’s vertical shape and period ornament.
A screen house remade for amplified music
In September 1917, the Ogden opened with Douglas Fairbanks in Wild and Wooly; movies, newsreels and vaudeville formed its early programme. It belonged to theatre operators John Thompson and J. A. Goodridge’s International Amusement Company, part of Capitol Hill’s early neighborhood-cinema buildout. After decades of film exhibition, repertory programming and Saturday-midnight Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings, an attendance decline led to closure in 1990. Denver promoter Doug Kauffman’s Nobody In Particular Presents then put $550,000 into reshaping the building as a concert hall. The work uncovered and restored a plaster backdrop of flowers and cherubs, added tiers for tables and seating, and gave the stage a 45-foot oak curve. War opened the revived Ogden on September 2, 1993. That night set its present identity: a former screen house retooled for live shows.
The concert configuration
Today’s calendar moves across metal, alternative, electronic, indie, rock, hip-hop, R&B and pop, giving the Ogden a broad touring-act booking approach. Inside, the room uses a multi-level layout with a wraparound balcony; removable seats and railings allow different configurations for different bills. Two full bars serve the 1,600-guest space, and the venue promotes its installed staging, lighting and sound systems. For a showgoer, the appeal is a historic theatre shell arranged for standing-room concert energy, with balcony options above the floor.
