Kessler Theater

At 600 capacity, the Kessler Theater gives Dallas a mid-sized concert room inside a 1941 Oak Cliff movie house. Its distinction comes from the scale of that restoration: Edwin Cabaniss and artistic director Jeff Liles turned a long-vacant historic building into a live-performance space in 2010, retaining its theater identity while building a room designed for close listening. The result sits between a club and a seated hall, with configurations that can tilt toward either experience.

Tornado, fire, and a March return

The Kessler dates to 1941 and began as a neighborhood cinema; Gene Autry bought it in 1945. Its screen run ended in 1957, the year a tornado struck the building. A Revival Tabernacle then occupied the site before a 1962 fire destroyed it, and the property later housed an embroidery company before years of vacancy. Edwin and Lisa Cabaniss bought the building in 2009, then undertook its conversion into a mixed-use performance venue. The reopening arrived in March 2010, with Josh Alan Friedman’s book-launch performance among the first-night events. In 2014, the building earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places, a formal marker for a theater that had moved through cinema, church use, commercial use, damage, dormancy, and music.

A room built around the show

The programming reaches beyond the venue’s Americana, blues, and rock base, with the official FAQ describing bills that range from heavy metal and dance music to classical and singer-songwriter shows. Kessler Presents uses in-house talent buying and also works through co-promotes and rental deals. Expect configurations to shift by artist: standing room, general-admission seating, gallery seats, tables, and suites all appear on sale. The elevated Reserved Gallery circles the stage area, offering sightlines from as close as 10 feet, plus its own adjacent bar space; floor, gallery, and table choices make ticket type central to the night’s feel.
