About Winter's Jazz Club

Winter’s Jazz Club is a 125-capacity jazz room in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood, a few blocks from Navy Pier. Its defining feature is the setting: a compact, table-seated listening room looking onto Ogden Slip, where a permanent stage keeps the music at the center of the evening. The scale suits a show built on details—vocal phrasing, small-group interplay, and the measured rise of a solo—while the club’s cocktail program gives the night a cabaret polish.

A club named for a record-filled childhood

Owner Scott Stegman opened Winter’s on November 15, 2016, after years of planning a club devoted to the straight-ahead jazz he grew up hearing at home. The name honors his mother, Marsha Winter, whose late-night listening—Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Carmen McRae, Lou Rawls, Nat King Cole, and Sarah Vaughan—shaped his attachment to the music. Stegman entered the Chicago jazz world as a venue owner, building a downtown room for local players alongside visiting artists.

The first anniversary offered the clearest early snapshot of that mission. On November 15, 2017, Winter’s marked a sold-out year with a program featuring Chicago vocalists and musicians including Paul Marinaro, Tammy McCann, Sarah Marie Young, and Art Davis. The anniversary coverage also identified singer Elaine Dame as talent coordinator and described a programming emphasis on vocalists, a useful distinction in a city full of instrumental jazz stages.

How the room works now

Winter’s presents classic, straight-ahead jazz, with singer-centered programs forming a visible part of the bill and Chicago artists sharing the schedule with national headliners. Shows run in 75-minute sets, usually two per night. Seating is first-come within General Admission and VIP sections, so early arrival matters for table choice and sightlines. The room’s compact listening-room format, cabaret tables, permanent stage, and full bar create a focused concert experience with drinks in hand and the band close by.
