Kingston Mines

Kingston Mines is a 400-capacity Chicago blues club in Lincoln Park, founded in 1968 and built around a simple live-music proposition: two bands perform on two separate stages. The full-venue figure comes from Chicago’s tourism bureau; the club calls itself the city’s largest and oldest continuously operating blues club. Its defining pleasure is choice: one room is playing while the other is readying its next set, creating an evening with built-in momentum.

A former machine shop, then a theater launchpad

Kingston Mines began in 1968 in a former machine shop on Lincoln Avenue, under physician Lenin “Doc” Pellegrino. Its early identity leaned toward coffeehouse programming and theater before the club settled into blues. The sharpest artifact from that first chapter arrived in 1971, when Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey’s Grease premiered at the Kingston Mines Theatre. Chicago Public Library preserves material from that original production, including a program in its theater collection.

The building story turned practical in 1980, when the Lincoln Avenue roof collapsed. Kingston Mines worked from a temporary North Clark Street site, then moved into its present Halsted Street home in 1982, taking over the former Redford’s jazz-club space. That relocation made the two-room format central to the night: music can keep moving between stages instead of gathering an audience around one headline set.

Two stages, late-running blues

The booking pattern favors blues ensembles across an early acoustic set, a North Stage bill, and a Main Stage bill; the latter two trade hour-long sets late into the evening. Sunday programming includes a blues jam. Expect Chicago-style electric blues at the core, with guitar-led bands, harmonica, R&B-inflected grooves, and artists drawn from the local circuit. The physical setup is two rooms with separate stages, plus drinks and food from Doc’s Kitchen, making it easy to shift rooms between sets.
