Green Mill

Green Mill is a roughly 100-capacity jazz room in Chicago’s Uptown, built for close-range listening: a narrow bar, booths, small tables, and a working calendar of recurring ensembles give it the feel of a neighborhood club with serious musical continuity. Its defining visual is the green neon façade; inside, the Art Deco back bar, plasterwork, and vintage murals preserve traces of the venue’s earlier eras. The room also hosts the long-running Uptown Poetry Slam.

A garden, a theatre, and a 1986 restart

The story began in 1907 as Pop Morse’s Roadhouse, a beer garden near the cemeteries of Uptown. Real-estate developer Tom Chamales bought it in 1910, expanded the operation with live entertainment, and renamed it Green Mill Gardens, borrowing its image from Paris’s Moulin Rouge while choosing green for the signifier. In 1926, the club briefly operated as the Montmartre Café before a Prohibition-related closure; it reopened within a year. The following year, its courtyard gave way to construction of the Uptown Theatre, shrinking the former gardens into the footprint remembered today.

The present-day chapter dates to June 19, 1986, when Dave Jemilo opened the current incarnation. That same summer, Marc Smith moved his reading series here: the first Uptown Poetry Slam took place on July 25, 1986, establishing a weekly program that still shares the room with the music.

The room today

Green Mill’s booking leans decisively toward jazz, with steady Chicago-based residencies, visiting quartets, swing-oriented bands, organ trios, and late-night jam sessions. The calendar’s repeated weekly names make this a venue for hearing musicians develop a relationship with the room, alongside weekend guests. Expect an intimate, seated-or-standing bar layout instead of a large concert hall: booths and tables sit close to the action, while the period back bar and murals form much of the visual frame. Friday and Saturday late sets extend into the early morning.
