About The Whistler

The Whistler is a Chicago live-music room with a reported 74-seat indoor bar capacity, operating in Logan Square as a bar, gallery, record label and venue. Its distinguishing feature is the shared frame for DJs, jazz groups, rock bands and electronic acts alongside art installations, readings and films. That mix gives a short-set performance the feel of a night inside a working creative space, with cocktails central to the experience.

A bar built as a creative room

Opened in 2008, The Whistler was built by Billy Helmkamp and Rob Brenner, collaborators behind Whistler Records and Blue Ribbon Glee Club. Their first layout was a 74-seat indoor bar extending to a 50-seat summer patio; its conversion into a creative room brought front-window art installations, local bands and DJs, plus cocktails by Paul McGee. Contemporary coverage recorded an agenda that paired music with film screenings, poetry readings and arts events on an almost nightly basis. On March 2, 2011, the house put its range on the line with its first spelling bee, hosted by Seth Dodson and Kellen Alexander of improv group 1, 2, 3 Fag!, drawing a 40-player field inside a room reported at just under 80 capacity. In September 2023, Helmkamp and Brenner marked the venue’s fifteenth anniversary with a cocktail-recipe book covering 2008–2023.

The room today

Today’s booking policy is direct: bands, DJs and other event proposers can email the venue. The house presents live music and DJs alongside gallery, film and reading programs; its own description names jazz, rock and electronic among the core sounds. The room is 21+, runs with no cover and takes no reservations. Its reported 74-seat indoor bar, with a 50-seat summer patio, makes for a small-format concert setting where the bar remains part of the show’s rhythm.
