The Owl

The Owl is a compact, 30-person standing-room bar venue in Chicago’s Logan Square, built for the stretch of a night when other rooms have gone dark. Its distinction is a late-hour liquor license: doors open at 5 p.m., drinks run until 4 a.m. Sunday through Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday, and DJs carry the room through closing. Concert scale stays close, with the back room supplying a 30-person show and party space.

A license, a conversion, a crowded first night

The Owl began as a conversion of La Estrella, a Mexican dance club at 2521 North Milwaukee Avenue. In July 2011, David Halpern’s group—already behind aliveOne, Estelle’s, and Easy Bar—took over the site and planned a neighborhood bar with 20 taps and an old-school jukebox. La Estrella’s late-night license passed to the new tenant, giving the project its defining all-hours frame before opening day arrived. The opening followed in September 2011; Chicago Magazine reported a packed first Saturday, with the 5 a.m. spot full by 11 p.m. and locals hunting for seats.

A 2013 overnight report caught the formula in motion: a slow early evening gave way to a DJ setting up in the rear room around midnight, disco lights coming on, security arriving, and a mixed late crowd filling the bar toward 2 a.m. That progression remains the clearest picture of what The Owl was designed to host: a neighborhood bar that shifts into a dance floor as the clock advances.

How the room works now

Programming is bar-led and dance-forward: resident DJs anchor Fridays and Saturdays, while rotating dance parties and monthly back-room events make room for the venue’s electronic, indie, and country-leaning calendar. Entry is generally free, with special-event exceptions; guests must be 21 or older. The layout divides into front and back rooms, and the rear room shares sound with the bar, so a show feels embedded in the full venue instead of sealed off. Wall-to-wall rear-room mirrors and a photobooth add visual texture; beer, cocktails, and late closing hours remain central to the visit.
