About The Hideout

The Hideout is Chicago’s 100-capacity listening room and bar, set in a balloon-frame house within the North Branch industrial corridor. Its scale is the draw: a performance space sits behind the original front bar, giving shows the feel of a house gathering with professional club sound. The venue’s musical lineage spans punk, alt-country, indie rock, post-rock and free jazz, while its stage has also hosted benefits, talks and offbeat community programs.

A factory bar becomes a stage

The front half of the house dates to 1890; a rear addition arrived in the 1950s, and the venue has carried the Hideout name legally since 1934. Tim and Katie Tuten and brothers Mike and Jim Hinchsliff bought the bar in October 1996, aiming to retain its factory-worker local character. Live music began at the front bar. In summer 1997, Robbie Fulks played an afternoon AIDS-ride benefit on a flat floor; Honeyboy Edwards followed that fall. Musicians and friends from Fitzgerald’s and Lounge Ax helped shape the rear room, whose stage and sound system grew from those early DIY shows. In March 2026, the four owners transferred the business to former employee and performer Teri O’Brien. The venue said its staff, regular programming and independent character would continue under her stewardship.

The room today

Public-event proposals arrive through the venue’s booking form, which welcomes bands, benefits and other events; private events go directly to management. The schedule carries a broad independent mix, led by rock, indie, punk, alt-country and free jazz, alongside electronic, jazz, R&B, Latin, pop and metal bills. For concertgoers, the practical picture is a compact general-admission room: a 16-by-10-foot stage, Midas M32 board, EV main speakers, Peavey subs and four monitor mixes. The front bar remains separate from the performance room.
