About Thalia Hall

Thalia Hall is Chicago’s Pilsen concert room, listed at 900 people for reception-style events, inside an auditorium modeled on Prague’s Old Opera House. Its concrete draw is the wraparound balcony and six opera boxes around the proscenium: a club-scale crowd gets a view framed by turn-of-the-century theater architecture. The 1892 building was conceived for music, theater and meetings alongside retail and apartments, bringing the original public-hall purpose directly into a gig.

A Czech public hall’s second act

Saloonkeeper John Dusek developed Thalia Hall in 1892 as a gathering place for Pilsen’s Bohemian community. Architects Faber & Pagels gave the mixed-use building a theater modeled after Prague’s Old Opera House, while its ground-level retail and residential space helped support the hall. Chicago designated the building a landmark on October 25, 1989.

Its public function reached beyond entertainment in 1915, when the hall hosted the drafting of a bill that helped pave the way for Czechoslovak statehood in 1918. Public access ended during the 1960s. After years of decline and foreclosure, a bank sold the property for $3.2 million in 2013 to an LLC operated by Bruce Finkelman and Craig Golden; their restoration returned the upper floors to concert use and launched the renewed Thalia Hall complex that September.

The room today

Thalia programs a broad contemporary mix: indie and alternative rock, folk, electronic, pop, R&B and metal all fit the bill. Shows are all ages unless an event carries a 17-plus or 21-plus designation. Most concerts use a general-admission, standing main floor; the balcony is seated, with first-come seating for seated shows. Three full bars operate inside the hall, and the six opera boxes remain a distinctive premium perch, reached by vintage wooden stairs.
