Tack Room

Tack Room is a 75-standing, 40-seated Pilsen room within Chicago’s Thalia Hall complex, shaped around a grand piano and compact enough for performers and audience to share the same conversational orbit. Its distinguishing feature is literal: the cocktail bar occupies John Dusek’s former carriage house, with horse imagery carried through the décor. Current programming frames it as a piano lounge and local cabaret tucked behind Thalia Hall’s staircase.

A carriage house finds its voice

The story begins with the larger property. In 1892, Bohemian immigrant tavern owner John Dusek built Thalia Hall as a mixed-use community project with storefronts, apartments, and a public hall for music and theatrical productions. Its carriage house held Dusek’s horses, supplying the small room that later became Tack Room with its purpose and name. The public hall closed during the 1960s and remained largely untouched until restoration work began at the end of 2013. That September, Bruce Finkelman and Craig Golden launched new restaurant, bar, and public-hall concepts in the building. Tack Room followed in July 2015, opening as a piano lounge in the former carriage house with 40 seats, live players, and audience singalongs. The result keeps the building’s equestrian past visible while giving its smallest public space a distinctly participatory musical role.

Tack Room programs resident piano players alongside songwriters, independent musicians, Latin-jazz trios, ambient music, and themed nights, making it a fit for listeners who enjoy a barroom-scale performance instead of a conventional club floor. The grand piano anchors the room, with seating gathered around it and a reservable piano table for small groups. Large windows open onto the patio in warm weather, while the cocktail list and small bites keep the room functioning as a hangout before, during, or after the music.
