About Sound-Bar
Sound-Bar is a Chicago River North nightclub with a stated maximum capacity of 1,200 guests. Opened in 2004, it occupies 20,000 square feet across two levels and centers the experience on a 4,000-square-foot dance floor, nine bars, four boutique lounges, and an exclusive VIP room. The scale distinguishes it from the city’s smaller DJ clubs: this is a multizone night out where the headliner shares space with table service, bars, and separate social pockets.
Built for the big-room DJ circuit
The project began in mid-2000, when Sound-Bar’s owners hired designer Rocco Laudizio and Slick Design and Manufacturing to create an upscale new club. Its March 26, 2004 opening arrived as a purpose-built, high-tech nightlife room, with stainless steel, smoked glass, custom furniture, video projection, lighting, and a substantial sound system shaping the original design. By August that year, the booking identity had already come into focus: British progressive-house DJ John Digweed made his Sound-Bar debut with an extended three-hour set on August 26, 2004.
A later turning point came with Chicago nightlife’s 2021 return: Sound-Bar’s reopening program on August 6 placed Krewella in the main room, with separate lower-level DJs. That two-floor format remains a useful clue to the venue’s character: a touring-DJ anchor upstairs, with additional programming and circulation elsewhere in the club.
How the room works now
Sound-Bar books touring DJs and resident-led club bills, with electronic music at the core; official listings also place Top 40, hip-hop, rock, pop, and R&B programming in the lower level on selected nights. Entry is strictly 21+. Main-room ticket buyers receive full-venue access, while table reservations add a VIP-oriented option and some guest-list offers apply only to the lower level. Expect a dance-floor-first layout, with lounges and bars providing breaks from the main-room crowd.
