Smoke & Mirrors

Smoke & Mirrors is a capacity-unpublished, late-night electronic-music venue in Chicago’s Logan Square. Its defining feature is the setting: an underground speakeasy within a three-concept hospitality complex beside Concord Music Hall, conceived as a home for an eclectic range of performers. The room’s red lighting and black anaglypta wallpaper give it a deliberately shadowed club character, a strong fit for DJs whose sets reward a full-room focus.

A new basement room enters Chicago’s dance circuit

Smoke & Mirrors emerged in 2022 as part of proprietor Nick Karounos’s planned neighborhood complex at North Milwaukee Avenue. Reporting that October placed the underground speakeasy alongside Stay Café and cocktail bar Bad Habit, with Smoke & Mirrors intended for an eclectic array of performing artists. Karounos’s wider portfolio then included Radius, Prysm, Concord, Auris Presents and ARC Music Festival, placing the room inside an established Chicago nightlife operation from its earliest public description.

A documented early statement of its musical direction arrived during ARC Music Festival’s 2023 After Dark program. Mixmag reported a Beatportal x Lady Of The House pre-party at Smoke & Mirrors featuring Biobooster, Dani Deahl, DJ Heather and DJ Lady D; the sequence moved from drum ’n’ bass into upbeat house and tougher, pounding territory. That one evening captures the room’s useful lane: electronic programming with local Chicago roots alongside visiting club talent.

The room today

Expect a 21-plus, DJ-led late-night format: the venue’s listed hours run Thursday through Saturday, with Friday service until 4 a.m. and Saturday until 5 a.m. Its programming centers electronic music, particularly house, techno and adjacent club styles, while promoters can reshape the full venue for themed bills. DICE listings say limited door tickets may be available through the night subject to capacity. Private rentals are also part of the operation. Visually, the room leans sleek and moody, with dim red light and black patterned walls instead of a bright concert-hall presentation.
