Sleeping Village

Sleeping Village is a 300-capacity concert venue in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood. Its defining feature is the split layout: a full front bar and patio feed into a standing-room performance space at the back. Opened by the team behind The Whistler, the venue was planned around its sound system, with dedicated acoustical and AV design alongside its beer-and-cider program. That makes it a good fit for listeners who want close-range sets without giving up a proper pre-show hang.

A cabinet store becomes a live room

The building at 3734 West Belmont Avenue housed Fabian’s Cabinets when plans for Sleeping Village surfaced in July 2016. Liquor-license applications listed Whistler co-owners Rob Brenner and Billy Helmkamp alongside Whistler bartender Eric Henry; each later took a distinct role, with Helmkamp leading music programming, Brenner operations, and Henry beverages. The three opened Sleeping Village in January 2018 as an 8,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor bar and venue. Its early live program began that March, with Helmkamp describing a broad musical remit spanning rock, jazz, electronic, and experimental work. The room’s sound system and acoustical design came from a University of Chicago-linked team, while technical director Erin Funk Brenner described infrastructure built for multitrack recording, video, and future expansion. The venue’s origin story therefore centers on a deliberate conversion: a former cabinet business reshaped for close, high-fidelity shows and a social bar program.

The room today

Sleeping Village currently accepts artist submissions through its booking form, keeping each inquiry on file for programming review. The calendar leans toward indie, rock, electronic, R&B, and pop, while its broader approach leaves room for DJ nights, comedy, readings, and community events. Concerts take place in a standing-room-only event space; the front bar and patio provide seating, and the venue offers accessible seating accommodations. Expect a 21+ crowd, a dedicated listening room, and 56 rotating drafts across beer and cider alongside cocktails and nonalcoholic options.
