About Salt Shed

Salt Shed is a Chicago concert complex with room for 7,000 people across the 3,000-standing Shed and 4,000-guest Fairgrounds. Its calling card is physical: a 1929 Morton Salt warehouse, still crowned by the giant rooftop wordmark and Umbrella Girl, now frames shows beside the Chicago River. The experience shifts with the season, moving between an A-frame industrial hall and a festival-scale outdoor floor with a skyline backdrop.

Salt, then sound

Morton Salt built the Elston Avenue facility in 1929 as a packaging and distribution complex, designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White. Barges once delivered salt from the Chicago River to the plant; the renovated site still carries 4-inch wood floors, an iron frame, Chicago brick, warehouse doors and salt elevators. Morton ended operations there in 2015, leaving the complex vacant. 16 on Center joined Blue Star Properties, R2 and Sky Deck to remake it as a creative hub centered on music, while retaining the familiar roof sign. The Fairgrounds opened in 2022. The indoor Shed followed on February 18, 2023, when electronic-funk group Big Gigantic headlined its opening night.

Choosing your spot

Salt Shed books touring bills across hip-hop, pop, alternative, indie, rock, folk, country and electronic music, alongside community events such as markets and yoga. Indoor shows use L-Acoustics sound, a general-admission floor, elevated reserved Grandstand seating, premium balconies and upper-level lounges; the Grandstand has a direct, unobstructed stage view. Outdoor shows occupy the Fairgrounds between the Shed and river, with a custom grandstand, balcony and rooftop options. Bars appear throughout both concert setups.
