About Reggies Music Joint
Reggies Music Joint is the 110-capacity bar-and-grill stage within the Reggies complex in Chicago’s South Loop. Its draw is proximity: performers play on a small, close-up stage amid exposed old Chicago brick, music-and-sports memorabilia, booths and bar seats. The room operates as both a restaurant and a concert space, making dinner-and-show pacing part of the experience instead of an add-on.
A record-store move became a two-room venue
Reggies opened on September 8, 2007, after a run-down auto bumper repair shop was converted into a music complex. Owner Robby Glick arrived with Record Breakers, the Hoffman Estates record shop he had founded in 1988; he closed that suburban store on October 20, 2006 and shifted his focus to Chicago, where he wanted a larger setting for both records and live bands. The new building gave him a restaurant stage, the larger Rock Club and an upstairs Record Breakers shop under one roof.
Its first show came in September 2007, headlined by New York glam-rock group Semi Precious Weapons. That opening bill captures the premise: a small room geared toward local and touring acts, built by a record-store owner whose earlier in-store performances had required moving merchandise aside for each set.
The room today
Music Joint schedules live music almost nightly and directs prospective performers to its band-booking form. Rock anchors the calendar, alongside blues, jazz, reggae and jam-oriented bills. For a show, choose between close stage-side seating, the long bar and booths; Reggies describes the layout as offering balanced sound and clear sightlines. Seventeen flat-screen televisions and two projectors keep the room firmly in bar territory, even during a set, so expect a sociable, multipurpose atmosphere instead of a sealed-off listening room.
