Liar's Club

Liar’s Club is a roughly 100-capacity, 21+ live-music bar in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, built for audiences who want the band close and the volume high. Open since 1995, the venue occupies the former River East and pairs punk-and-metal programming with DJ nights, a dance floor, dark walls, red light, and an abundance of KISS memorabilia. Its scale is the draw: shows play out in a compact room where the stage feels near from almost anywhere.

A former River East with a punk owner at the helm

Liar’s Club began its present chapter in 1995, taking over a space previously called the River East. Owner Herb Rosen also played in Chicago punk band Rights of the Accused, a connection that helps explain the club’s durable place on bills built around punk, metal, and hard-edged local rock. The building carries a darker earlier history as well: CBS Chicago reported that Frank Hansen, who owned a bar there with his wife Julia, was convicted in 1988 of her murder, committed in the building two years earlier.

Rosen’s role reaches beyond running the bar. In June 2021, he offered Liar’s Club for a Dying Scene “Resurrection” benefit featuring Squared Off, Voice of Addiction, Aweful, and B.R.O.K.E.; the club contributed its door take and a share of bar proceeds. That kind of all-in, scene-facing gesture says plenty about the venue’s working character: a bar owner putting a small room and its resources behind a local punk fundraiser.

What the room asks of a showgoer

Expect a standing, intimate bar-room setup with a small stage, a dance floor, and a long bar anchoring the space. Liar’s books punk, metal, alternative rock, electronic acts, DJs, and occasional themed events; current listings continue that mix of touring names and local support. Entry is 21+, tickets are limited to room capacity, and the bar operates cash-only, with an ATM on site. Arrive early for a clear spot near the stage, especially when a multi-band bill draws a full house.
