Le Piano

Le Piano is a jazz-focused listening room in Chicago’s Rogers Park, with a publicly listed capacity unavailable. Its distinguishing feature is literal and musical: a Yamaha Conservatory Grand Piano anchors the performance space, where shows unfold beside a cozy bar, banquettes, and small round tables. The room sits on the cobblestoned stretch of Glenwood Avenue by the Morse Red Line, its tall French windows facing the elevated tracks and local murals.

A coffeehouse address becomes a piano room

The address carries a much longer performance history than Le Piano itself. No Exit Café began in Evanston in September 1958, founded by Northwestern students Bill Harmon and Dick McKernan, then relocated to Lunt and Glenwood on December 7, 1967 after Northwestern acquired its earlier building for student housing. At 6970 North Glenwood, the café made room for folk musicians, beat poets, jazz, acoustic open mics, and improv; the Chicago Encyclopedia identifies No Exit as a Rogers Park forum for folk musicians and beat poets.

Le Piano opened in 2018, founded by musician Chad Willetts with business partner Joe Quinlan. Their conversion followed a later Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre tenure under the No Exit name, shifting the room’s focus to close-range jazz performance and cocktails. Willetts replaced the former café’s upright-piano association with the grand piano that remains the visual center of the club.

The room today

Le Piano books a recurring, musician-led weekly program: jazz trios and quartets sit alongside Hammond B3 nights, Latin jazz, funk- and Afro-jazz late sets, cabaret, and an open Monday jam welcoming participants. This is a room for attentive listening, with tables and cove-style banquettes close to the players; the adjacent bar leaves the music area feeling like a compact supper-club setting. French windows and the high ceiling provide welcome visual air around an otherwise intimate layout.
