About Jazz Showcase
Jazz Showcase is a 170-seat jazz room in Chicago’s South Loop, led by Wayne Segal and built for close-range listening. Its present home sits in Dearborn Station, the former passenger terminal, while photographs, programs, and posters from earlier eras line the room. The result is a compact seated club with a raised stage at one end and a strong sense of the music’s local paper trail.
A club that kept moving
Joe Segal founded Jazz Showcase in 1947, after helping organize weekly jazz sessions at Roosevelt University. The presentation later traveled across Chicago addresses, including a 14-year run at the Blackstone Hotel from 1981 through 1995. One preserved weekend arrived on November 13 and 14, 1992: Ahmad Jamal’s trio recorded performances at the Blackstone-era Showcase, released as Chicago Revisited: Live at Joe Segal’s Jazz Showcase. The club closed its River North room on January 1, 2007 amid rising rents, then reopened in June 2008 at Dearborn Station. The present performance space had previously housed the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center, giving Segal a large room with an elevated stage built to hold ensembles as well as trios.
The listening room now
The booking lane is jazz, with touring players and Chicago musicians sharing the calendar; the club also presents early and late sets through much of the week, plus a Sunday matinee. Expect tables and chairs across the floor, a bar, and a few central couches, all facing the stage. Preferred seating appears on many listings, so arrival time and ticket tier can shape the view. For a show where the set itself is the evening’s focus, the room’s small scale is the draw.
