Gallery Cabaret

Gallery Cabaret is a 70-capacity, 21-and-over bar stage in Chicago’s Bucktown, established in 1988. Its distinguishing feature is a seven-night performance rhythm paired with a suggested-donation model: artists receive payments through audience contributions, while the bar’s cabaret rules keep the room free of traditional ticketing. That makes the Gallery a compact listening room and a low-stakes entry point for musicians, comics, poets, and regulars sharing one small stage.

A corner bar becomes a stage

At 2020 North Oakley, a building dating to 1896 had long operated as a neighborhood bar before Ken “Kenny” Strandberg turned it into Gallery Cabaret in 1988. Strandberg had worked in Las Vegas big-band clubs, and his opening plan centered live jazz. A durable marker of the early musical identity came in the 1990s, when blues singer Rick “Fish” Janes led the Tuesday jam and made the Fish & the Bluefins cutout displayed above the back bar. Later reporting credits the small, spotlit stage with early appearances by Liz Phair and the Smashing Pumpkins.

A recent turning point arrived in January and February 2026, when current owner Mike Strandberg paused operations for two months to reassess the business. In late February, Double Door co-owner Sean Mulroney joined the effort; WBEZ reported a March 1 soft opening and programming through April. The reset kept Gallery Cabaret active as a neighborhood performance space, with fresh booking support alongside its recurring community nights.

The room now

Gallery Cabaret’s calendar divides the week by format: jazz and big-band sets on Monday, an open jam Tuesday, original-music bills Wednesday, open mic Thursday, and booked bands Friday and Saturday. Jazz, blues, rock, R&B, hip-hop, comedy, poetry, and singer-songwriter sets can all fit the broad booking frame. Players get a house drum kit, bass and guitar amps, DI boxes, and a regularly tuned 1938 baby grand called Maggie. The elevated stage faces the bar, where beer, wine, and liquor provide the room’s social center.
