About Epiphany Center for the Arts

Epiphany Center for the Arts in Chicago is a multiroom concert campus with configurations for audiences of 50 to 1,500, set inside the 1885 Church of the Epiphany and its modern annex. Its concrete distinction is the contrast between rooms: Epiphany Hall occupies the former church, while the Catacombs sits beneath it amid original stone walls and wood beams. The campus also includes the smaller Sanctuary, galleries, studios, a café-bar, and outdoor spaces.

A church with civic memory

The Episcopal Diocese built the Church of the Epiphany in 1885, commissioning Edward Burling and Francis Whitehouse for a Richardsonian Romanesque design in red Lake Superior sandstone. Its life before concerts carries unusual civic weight: assassinated Chicago Mayor Carter Harrison Sr.’s funeral took place here in 1893. In the 1960s, the building became known as the People’s Church; the Illinois Black Panther Party ran a Free Breakfast for Children program and rallies here, and Fred Hampton led his last Black Panther meeting in the church before his death in 1969. The diocese closed the church in 2011 amid dwindling membership. Developer David Chase and Kimberly Rachal bought it in 2017, then adapted the complex as Epiphany Center for the Arts while retaining its protected architectural fabric.

Three rooms, wide remit

West Loop Entertainment serves as the in-house promoter and works directly with artists and agents, giving the calendar a broad, deliberately mixed remit: jazz, blues, rock, pop, funk, classical, R&B, soul, folk, house, indie, hip-hop and rap all appear in the venue’s stated programming. Epiphany Hall supplies an open floor plan, arched ceiling, Tiffany stained glass, a 44-foot-wide stage, and configurable seating. For intimate bills, the Sanctuary has vaulted ceilings, chandeliers, a built-in stage and its own Niche Bar; for club-focused sets, the Catacombs brings the underground stone-and-beam setting.
