About Empty Bottle

Empty Bottle is a 400-capacity, 21+ bar and concert room in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village. Its distinction arrives in the scale: bands play inside a compact former neighborhood bar whose front game room, piano by the bar, and off-kilter floorplan keep the performance space woven into the hangout. Bruce Finkelman’s program draws local, regional, and touring acts across alternative rock, punk, metal, hip-hop, electronic, experimental music, and jazz.

A Halloween move and a steam-filled Fourth

Finkelman opened Empty Bottle in 1992 as a stripped-back Ukrainian Village bar, stocked with a pool table, a nine-beer list, and a jukebox running from Monster Magnet to Bill Monroe. On Halloween 1993, he shifted the operation two blocks north into its present, larger, sound-equipped building, reopening across three nights capped by Scrawl. The property had been the Friendly Inn, a bar local residents called the “Bucket of Blood”; Finkelman recalled witnessing a bat attack across the street while signing papers to buy it. A sold-out Fourth of July bill pairing Tortoise with the Sea and Cake brought a different kind of upheaval: lightning struck a transformer outside, cut the air conditioning, and left Finkelman seeing steam rise from the packed audience. Those episodes explain the venue’s enduring appeal: close quarters, eccentric circumstances, and bills that make room for risk.

The room in practice

The working format suits discovery: 21+ shows with local, regional, and touring performers, plus a broad slate spanning alternative, punk, metal, rock’n’roll, hip-hop, electronic, experimental music, and jazz. The room holds 400 and retains a bar-first layout, with a front game room, piano by the bar, and a cramped stage. Arrive early if a clear view matters; settle close to the performance area before the crowd gathers. The surrounding bar space gives the night a social, informal rhythm between sets.
