About Constellation

Constellation is a 250-capacity Chicago performance room shaped for close listening: its main distinction is a shared home with multidisciplinary arts organization Links Hall inside the former Viaduct Theatre. Drummer, composer and presenter Mike Reed built the venue around progressive jazz, improvised music, experimental work and contemporary classical performance, giving small ensembles and visiting artists a technically equipped stage in Roscoe Village.

A theatre becomes a meeting point

Reed opened Constellation in March 2013 in the former Viaduct Theatre, creating a building partnership with Links Hall, which moved in as a tenant and collaborator. The arrangement joined Reed’s music programming with Links Hall’s dance, performance and cross-disciplinary practice under one roof.

The opening took shape on April 1, 2013, when Links Hall presented Fraction: Dance in Progress, a program of works-in-progress that included Near North Montessori students, flamenco artists and Seldoms member Philip Elson. That inaugural bill captured the venue’s wider remit from its first evening: experimental music on one part of the calendar, dance and performance development on another.

Constellation established a nonprofit arm in 2018, directing that structure toward artist support and diverse programming. Its regular Frequency Series and annual Frequency Festival place Chicago musicians and composers alongside visiting artists, while the house’s yearly program features hundreds of performers and a strong local share.

The room today

Expect bookings led by jazz, improvisation, experimental music and contemporary classical, with crossover space for electronic, indie and multidisciplinary bills. Most concerts use a fully seated arrangement: theater seats rise on risers, folding chairs fill the floor, and standing-room layouts appear for larger-capacity shows. Two performance spaces and a bar support the format; the bar opens before performances and continues through intermission and after the set. Wheelchair seating and accessible washrooms are available.
