About Cole's Bar
Cole’s Bar is a roughly 100-capacity Logan Square, Chicago, room built around a split personality: a long front-bar space gives way to a separate back room with a stage. The house also keeps a vintage film photo booth, one of six remaining in Chicago according to its FAQ. Shows run in a 21-plus setting, with musicians, artists and comedians sharing the calendar. The combination keeps the bar active before and after a set.
A pool hall turned launching pad
Coleman Brice soft-opened Cole’s on July 24, 2009, in the former space of Rene’s Shooting Gallery; two weeks later, local coverage described the venue as a former Milwaukee Avenue pool hall transformed into a neighborhood tavern. Brice had played in the Chicago band Splendid Ape and saved for seven years while working as an accountant before opening the place, an origin that put a big music stage at the center of the plan. The early calendar made that purpose clear: on August 8, 2009, Cole’s billed The Ultimate Boeing 747, Unique Chique and Ocelots & Others. Brice framed the room as a home for eclectic local performers, with free nightly bands at opening.
The room, show night by show night
Cole’s books through a collaborative team. Artists and audience members must be 21 or older, its PA and sound setup are in house, and touring bands are asked to bring two local supporting acts when pitching a date. Music sits alongside a Wednesday comedy open mic, while the venue describes its performers as up-and-coming musicians, artists and comedians. Expect the bar in front and performance room in back; the front room stays free, while back-room shows usually carry admission.
