Chop Shop

Chop Shop is a 450-capacity Chicago room whose unusual setup puts a concert venue inside a former auto body shop shared with a butcher, deli, restaurant, and bar. The live space began as 1st Ward and sits at the rear of the larger operation, making a pre-show meal or drink part of the building’s design instead of an afterthought. For audiences, the appeal is a club-scale room with the useful infrastructure of a full hospitality venue.

Owner Nick Moretti bought the historic industrial building in July 2011 and began construction in early 2013. His first idea was an Italian-style salumeria; the project grew into a combined butcher shop, restaurant, bar, and event space, with the performance room named 1st Ward. Chicago Magazine described the plan that spring as a performance venue set alongside the retail and dining business in the old auto-body site.

The opening arrived in stages that fall. Dose Market, the butcher counter, and deli opened on September 29, 2013; the restaurant and bar followed September 30. Moretti said concerts and events would begin soon afterward, aiming for four to eight shows each month. That rollout explains Chop Shop’s identity: live music was built into a multi-use neighborhood business from day one, with food service and programming operating as connected parts of the same project.

The room and the program

Chop Shop’s calendar crosses rock, R&B, hip-hop, country, and pop, while its in-house booking and marketing team also works with entertainment planners. The current room is presented as a customizable 5,000-square-foot space, with 20-foot ceilings, exposed brick, modular staging, and an in-house audio/visual package. The restaurant and bar sit within the same operation, so the venue suits a night built around a drink or dinner before the set as comfortably as a straight-through concert visit.
