About Carol's Pub
Carol’s Pub is a 164-capacity music bar in Chicago’s Uptown, with country at the center and enough stage time for rock, folk, indie and metal bills. Its sharpest distinction is a second life: the room began in 1972, closed in 2016, then resumed in 2018 with its honky-tonk character carried into a rebuilt space. The small scale makes this a close-quarters show, with the stage, dance floor and bar all part of the same evening.
A dance floor, a shutdown, and a return
Ted Harris opened the country-western bar in 1972 and named it for his wife, Carol Harris. Carol assumed ownership following Ted’s 1993 death, and the pub grew around live country music; Diamondback played there near-nightly for years as its house band.
The first run ended in September 2016 after financial problems brought a closure. Promoter and Joe’s on Weed owner Ed Warm bought the space, then reopened Carol’s on December 18, 2018. Renovation rebuilt a warped wall, added a sound system and bay windows that swing toward Clark Street, and moved several west-wall seats aside for a sound booth. Those choices retained a dance-friendly performance room while giving the old bar a durable working infrastructure.
The room now
Carol’s operates as a country-led showcase, pairing new local acts with national talent and occasional surprise pop-up sets; its present listing also includes rock, folk, indie and metal. Live music runs four days a week in the operator’s venue materials. The room uses a secondary area for the stage, dance floor and overflow seating, with the sound booth along the west wall and original windows preserved as wall décor. Expect a compact, standing-forward club feel with seats shifting as a show calls for dancing.
